Visa-free travel to the Schengen area: the rules in 2026
Georgian citizens with an ordinary biometric passport can still enter the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Since 6 March 2026, visa-free travel has been suspended only for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports.
- Visa-free travel covers short trips only: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. It does not give you the right to work or to live there — for that you need a national visa or a residence permit.
- At the border you may be asked for a return ticket, a hotel booking or your host's address, travel insurance, and proof of sufficient funds (cash or a bank card).
- From 6 March 2026, for 12 months (until 6 March 2027), the European Commission suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service and official passports. Ordinary passports are not affected.
- The Commission says that if the problems are not addressed, the suspension can be extended by up to 24 months and widened to all Georgian citizens. Check the current status before you travel.
- Member states have been advised to apply heightened checks to Georgian citizens at the border — carry your documents and be ready for extra questions.
